ICYMI: Two-Faced, Double-Talking Hugin Shows True Trump Colors

Hugin reassures GOP insiders he’s all-in on Trump despite months pretending to be ‘independent’, ‘different kind of Republican’

New Brunswick, NJ – While Bob Hugin has spent millions on television ads and months parading around the state claiming to be “independent” and a “different kind of Republican” in an attempt to appeal to New Jersey voters, the greedy drug company CEO is secretly reassuring GOP insiders that he would be a vote for Donald Trump if he were elected to the U.S. Senate.

According to a report by NJ Globe, “Hugin is now touting his support of Trump in an effort to get targeted Republican households to vote-by-mail (VBM) as [his campaign] seek[s] to increase turnout in GOP counties for the midterm elections.”  Hugin campaign literature and flyers reportedly sent to registered Republicans say he “will work with President Trump” and “vote to confirm Supreme Court nominees.”

“Bob Hugin is a complete phony.  He is an ultra-right-wing conservative masquerading as a moderate in an attempt to appeal to New Jersey voters who otherwise wouldn’t give him the time of day,” said Menendez for Senate Communications Director Steve Sandberg.  “Bob Hugin is a greedy, drug company CEO who made his fortune ripping off cancer patients, and then spent those millions helping to elect right-wing candidates who actively fight against New Jersey’s interests.  He actively fought against women’s inclusion and protections for members of the LGBTQ community.  It’s clear Bob Hugin is willing to say and do anything to buy a seat in the United States Senate, but no one should be surprised that a guy who donated the max to Donald Trump, served as his state finance chair and a delegate to the Republican National Committee, and held an official post on Trump’s transition team would have Trump’s back.  It’s about time New Jerseyans see the real Bob Hugin and what he stands for.”

After saying he would have voted for Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s first pick to the Supreme Court, Bob Hugin has announced his support for the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, who would shift the high court to the extreme, far-right and threaten to erase decades of progress made on civil, worker, voter, women’s and LGBTQ rights, overturn Roe v. Wade, roll back clean air and clean water environmental protections, take health care away from millions of Americans, and end protections for patients with pre-existing conditions.

According to public records and tax information, Hugin has personally contributed $2.1 million dollars over the past 20-plus years to right-wing candidates, PACs and organizations that oppose a woman’s right to choose, LGBTQ equality, and any sensible gun safety measures, including $250,000 to help elect Donald Trump.  Hugin was Chris Christie’s top donor and gave $500,000 to the extremist Heritage Foundation.

Hugin’s deep-pocketed donations have gone to House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has led the crusade in Congress to defund Planned Parenthood, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Rep. Tom McArthur.  Hugin has also historically backed anti-gay politicians like Scott Garrett and the late North Carolina senator and segregationist Jesse Helms.
